5th in class... go me :)

3rd in Race class, with a stock 4cylinder!! :D
I also had two spinouts. That was a lot of fun!
I was pushing the car as hard as I normally do while autocrossing with the SCCA, but my max speed in those events is usually around 55mph. The turns where I spun out where at around 70mph at entry into the corner. Obviously, I suck at high speed corners. hehe  :erin:

I use to race a VW Jetta VR6 (4door)6 years ago, I could out corner the best of them but on the long straights they would walk me. Front wheel drive should handle just as good as the Big guys! I found the best way is to use the engine's power to pull you around the corner....Now I have to learn how to drive a big pig with lots of HP....
Good Luck,

I got 4th in the SM class. Not bad for the stang's first auto-x. :) It was pushing bad and the brakes were fading, I have a bit of work to do before I do it again.

I have some confessing to do though... I have autocrossed with the houston region SCCA for about a year now.
Which brings up a good point.
The racing we did this past weekend was not autocrossing. The only thing that was close to it was the slalom in the back stretch.
First of all let me say, the event was AWESOME! Dont get me wrong, I loved it!
But it was still more of a road racing course than autox.
We find the regular autox events to be much more technical and challenging.
If you liked this event, you should come out to one of the scca events, here is the website for autocross:
http://houscca.com/solo2/solo2.aspx
Again, please dont get me wrong. This event was GREAT!
I am only pointing out that it is labeled incorrectly as autocross, when it was more a mix between road racing with a slight touch of autocross.

Good Luck,
Using the engines power to pull you around a corner is not a description of a FWD setup.
It might have been for your car, or for your driving style, but it is definitely not true for FWD as compare to RWD.
Come out to the next Houston SCCA autox event on July 5th (saturday at night) around 7pm located at Gulf Greyhound Park, and I would be more than happy to give you a ride in my FWD for a lap.
We'll see about gassing it around the corner. :D

I have also been an autocrosser for 2 years.
I would say that this more open racing is at least as technical and challenging. Theres a lot more room out there and figuring out how to make the best use of the width of the track was a challenge. Braking points were also much more critical to get exactly right.
This was definitely different than autocrossing, but I wouldn't call it less challenging by any means.

With a nose heavy pig like a mk3 Jetta VR6 (I'm assuming mk3 due to the time period of ownership) You really are basically using the engine's torque to pull your ass around the corners.
How do I know? I've had 3 different VW's, 2 of them with vr6's. If you have the rear sway bar set correctly.. things change, but int he stock fashion... you're really looking at a strange car who likes the fire hydrant pose (on 3 wheels, inner rear wheel in the air.. like a dog pissing on a fire hydrant).

Very true about one leg up......Yes it was III !! I changed the springs, shocks, added rear adjustable sway bar, front and rear braces, and added good tires and that's about it.....No more 3 leggged dog....
Now I have a bigger pig to deal with.... ha ha

Neuspeed 28mm Adjustable?
Yeah.. I feel ya on the bigger pig to deal with. I moved from a mk2 GTI with neuspeed race,a nd koni adjustables to my current 93 Cobra.
I'd do it all over again and again... but it's an adjustment. I still don't feel totally confortable in the car. :(
Congrats ont he 03 though.. you've made a wise decision.

I do agree that the course was setup more as a road course than an AutoX. We just labeled it as an AutoX for the sake of not having a proper name to call it. ;) However, I disagree about it being less challenging. Well, maybe less challenging on a lower powered car, but a higher powered car will get it up to speed. You're maneuvering at higher speeds than a regular AutoX. I had to shift into 3rd gear on 3 different parts of the track.
As mentioned before, this whole event was setup to be a "fun run" type event to begin with. Never was it intended to be a true competition. Just a get together so every can tear up their cars and eat! :p
I'm glad you had fun out there though. Which was what it was all about. I think I've seen your car out at an A&M AutoX a few months back.

Also remember that this is more of a social event for us, we had people from about 20 states attending this event. Its really is not a competition, but a place we can all gather socialize and have fun running on a track. 75% of the attendees have never AutoX'ed or Road Raced.

I hope I did not come off wrong.
i completely understand what you are saying.
This truly was an AWESOME event!
What speeds were you getting up to?
I know I redlined in 2nd, and for me that is right at 70mph.
Thanks for the pic by the way!
Do any of you know who was taking photos/video back near the slalom? Will they be posting on here?
I know I got sideways right in front of him and I would love to see that one! :D

With my gearing, my rev limiter (6200-6250 RPMs) kicks in at around 63-64 MPH. BUt it actually redlines at 5800 and that's where I shifted at. I think I was hitting somewhere around 75+ after turn 2. I dunno. :dunno: I never looked at the speedo so don't quote me on it. :D

Not that it matters what we call the event at Stangbang other than "FUN", but perhaps this was more like SCCA Solo I than Solo II? I don't know, I've never done Solo I with them.
We find the regular autox events to be much more technical and challenging.
Perhaps road racing is just a different challenge? I've done just a smattering of both, find them both to be technical and challenging in different ways.
My interpretation:
AutoX - Me vs. the track = run time
Road Racing - Me vs. the track on qual day = run time
Me vs. the competition on race day = finish
Rarely in road racing do you get to drive the "optimal" line, it really is challenging to deal with competitiors on the track at the same time, you don't get to take the corners the same way you practice them, sometimes you get to even make up completely new moves! You certainly see some new parts of the track you didn't get to drive while qualifying, hehehe. Also, if there's a cone ON the track in road racing it's because someone went off track and drug one back onto the surface
